Pilot and Innovative Projects Program

The Pilots and Innovative Projects Program will help increase the number of researchers using a population and/or social science perspective on Hispanic AD/ADRD with an emphasis of integration with neuropsychology and biology. Funding will help new investigators conduct population and/or social science research on Hispanic AD/ADRD using studies both in the U.S and internationally.

  • Disparities in Hospice Utilization and End-of-Life Outcomes Among Hispanic Medicare Beneficiaries with Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Dementias. Project Lead: Greg N. Orewa, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health, UTSA.
  • The interplay of area deprivation and individual socio-behavioral determinants of health for cognitive function among aging Hispanics in South Texas. Project Lead: Stephanie Santiago-Mejias, PhD, Assistant Professor, Neuropsychology, UTHSA.
  • Assessing Practice Effects in Population-Based Longitudinal Studies of Cognitive Function in Mexican Older Adults. Project Lead: Amy Werry-McFarlin, PhD, Assistant Professor, Neuropsychology, UTHSA.
  • Stress and Cognitive Function of Return Migrants in Mexico. Project Lead: Xi Mao, PhD, Assistant Professor, Economics, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).

Funding will also help established investigators lead innovations in population, social science research on Hispanic AD/ADRD through enhancement of existing longitudinal cohorts, augmenting them to better represent Hispanics, improve ADRD and other measures, or test key mechanisms.

  • Feasibility of Innovative Biomarkers for AD/ADRD in Hard-to-Reach Populations. Project Leads: Claudia Satizabal, PhD, Associate Professor, Population Health Sciences, UTHSA; Tiffany Kautz, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, UTHSA.
